Fishing in Lake Placid: The Necessities

Before you drop a line in search of your next catch, there are a few things you need to know. Most importantly, you must have a valid New York State fishing license. You can purchase a fishing license online or in person at a local licensing vendor.

You also need to ensure that the fish you are trying to catch is in season. Trout season typically runs from April 1 to October 1, while bass and pike season runs from the third Saturday in June to November 30. To stay up to date on New York’s fishing seasons, check the Department of Environmental Conservation website.

Where to Go Fishing Near Lake Placid

There are many great places to go fishing in and around Lake Placid. Here’s a look at some of our favorite fishing holes in the area.

  • Mirror Lake: Head to Downtown Lake Placid and drop a line in beautiful Mirror Lake. This lake is most well known amongst anglers for being stocked with rainbow trout. No motorized boats are allowed, so you’ll have to fish from the shore or paddle out in a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard.
  • Lake Placid: Another nearby option is Lake Placid. Like Mirror Lake, Lake Placid is known for its trout. However, there are also larger species to be found here, like Northern Pike. Unlike Mirror Lake, you can use a motorized boat on Lake Placid.
  • Ausable River: The Ausable River is a trout angler’s paradise. Stretching 512 square miles, the Ausable River attracts fly fishing enthusiasts from all over the region for a chance to reel in tons of fish. The Ausable River is undoubtedly one of the top fishing spots in all of the Adirondacks.
