A Few Fun Facts about a Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon goes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that partially or fully blocks sunlight in some areas. As the Moon’s orbit is not on the exact plane as the other two planets, this phenomenon only happens occasionally.
There are a few different types of solar eclipses.
- Total: when the passing Moon completely blocks the face of the sun
- Annual: when the Moon passes between the Eart and Sun but is at or near its farthest point from Earth
- Partial: the Moon passes between the planets, but all three are not perfectly lined up
- Hurbid: an eclipse that shifts between annular and total
The eclipse taking place next April 8 is a total solar eclipse.
Why Come to Lake Placid
On April 8, 2024, the total solar eclipse crosses North America traveling through states like Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. According to Road Trippers Magazine, one of the best places to watch the eclipse is right here in Lake Placid. We will experience over three minutes of totality around 3:26 p.m. Totality is when the Moon completely “covers” the sun. The total duration of the eclipse from start to finish will last about two hours and 23 minutes.
