The Return of the Great Camp
A century ago, New York's tycoons vacationed upstate in the Adirondack Mountains, building lavish camps that have since largely disappeared. But entering the brand-new Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, New York, is like stepping into a grand Adirondack-style camp of yesteryear. With its rough-hewn pine beams, massive granite fireplaces and soaring roofline, the lodge's Great Room is adorned by mounted trophy heads, handwoven rugs and stag-antler chandeliers. Equally sumptuous are the suites, all of which include fully equipped kitchens, still more fireplaces, flat-screen TVs, private porches and mountain views. On summer days, you can hike or bike the trails of the surrounding peaks or canoe sparkling Lake Placid. Then again, you could never leave the lodge at all?what with an indoor-outdoor pool, a year-round skating rink, two bowling lanes, a movie theater and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
